Holocaust Dental Gold: 20 Pounds per Krema per Day

The following is taken from "The Kingdom of Auschwitz" by Otto
Freidrich:
"Each crematorium had four large elevators. Each elevator could hold
about twenty-five bodies. When it was filled, a bell rang and the
elevator rose to the incineration room. Sliding doors opened
automatically. The Sonderkommando prisoners again siezed the thongs
around the wrists of the corpses and hauled them onto a chute that
carried them toward the furnaces. One last rite still had to be
administered. All the victims' hair was shaved off and stored. Then
the Tooth Kommando, eight prisoners who had once been dental surgeons,
set to work. They pried open the corpses' mouths and yanked out any
gold teeth or bridgework they could find. The gold teeth were dropped
into buckets filled with an acid that burned away all flesh and bone.
According to Dr. Nyiszli's calculations, these operations recovered
about eighteen to twenty pounds of gold per crematorium per day. The
bodies were then loaded onto pushcarts, three to a cart, and slid into
the ovens."
In an extermination camp operating four crematoria, 20 pounds of gold
per crematorium per day would equate to around 500 pounds of gold in a
week.
At today's prices that's more than three million US dollars.

Don't know of mercury but gold was commonly used in those days for
dental work. I have seen old Jews from Eastern Europe with gold
fillings.

I often muse how our species can muster up the greatest of
accomplishments and almost at the same time, within our collective
lifetimes, also sink to the lowest of evils.

As an aside, prior to the 1970s, most bridgework, including U.S.
bridgework was fabricated from gold alloy. Ceramco developed the
porcelain fused to metal technique in the 1950s - 1960s. There were
two versions, gold and "white gold" which was silver in color.
Even someone of the stature of D. Walter Cohen, the periodontist would
install gold bridgework.
After the breakup of the Soviet Union many of the immigrants presented
with "GOLD-PLATED" metal crowns and bridgework. Once the surface was
broken through one could observe the base metal underneath.
If some individual had gold, which was only one in a thousand or one
in then thousand, he wasm ost likely KGB. That group had their own
hospitals, doctors, etc., and of course access to the best materials
and people.

You've brought this up before, Keith. Your ranting about electrical
potentials in amalgam doesn't bother me in the least.
But implying that "ethnic groups" can make decisions is a strange
concept to me. Whom do you ask to get an answer?
You certainly can talk about cultural practices and norms. But to
imply that a large group of people distinguished by ethnicity alone can
"decide" an issue such as this seems (to me) to be reminiscent of racist
ideologies of the past.
Do others agree, or am I just being oversensitive again?

aren't assured, they are protected. Don't ever think you can't be
